| CHECKPRINT IN AWARDS FINALS FOR FIFTH TIME |
| |
RECORD-BREAKING Checkprint celebrated a treble success at the finals of the Leicestershire Business Awards.
The cheque printing and secure print solutions specialist was a finalist in two categories and also narrowly missed out on winning the prestigious Leicestershire Business of the Year title.
However, making it to the finals was a triumph in itself since it was a record fifth time in six years that Checkprint was up for the honours.
“We were really hoping that this would be our year to win,” said Martin Ruda, managing director, “We are not too disappointed though since we know that just getting to the finals for the fifth time was a major achievement. To be nominated in the ‘Business of the Year’ category is testimony to a remarkable team of people at Checkprint.
“We are a successful, growing and innovative company so there is always next year.”
The Hinckley based company was shortlisted for the Contribution to the Community award, acknowledging the staff’s support for a range of charity fund-raising, educational and environmental initiatives.
Martin Ruda was a finalist in the Entrepreneur of the Year award.
Making it to the runners-up position in the two categories also took the company through to the overall Business of the Year award – and once again it was a runner-up.
No other company has matched Checkprint’s success in the business awards.
It was a finalist in the Success Through People category in 2001, a category it went on to win the following year. It was then a finalist in the Contribution to the Community section in 2003 and Enterprise through Innovation finalist in 2005.
This year’s awards were held at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall on Friday evening.
Checkprint is a member of the TALL Group of Companies which also includes TALL Security Print Ltd in Runcorn, Cheshire. The group works for many of the country’s leading banks, building societies and financial institutions. |

| TALL ACHIEVES BS7799 |
| |
THE TALL Group – the security print and solutions specialist – has achieved BS7799 (ISO27001) – the British Standard for information security management systems.
The Association for Payments and Clearing Services (APACS) is demanding that all cheque printers meet the standard in order to retain their approved status within the Cheque Printer Accreditation Scheme (CPAS).
Over the last six months, a team of up to five people, led by TALL’s group IT manager Wayne Carlisle, have worked on the company’s accreditation to BS7799 (ISO27001) and the rigorous APACS Standard 55 which governs cheque printing.
“In effect there has been little physical change to our operations,” Wayne explained, “But we have had to introduce some new procedures for the way that our work is documented so that we are more accountable.
“There has been a lot of work in the background to support the safeguards that we have in place in our information security management systems.
“We have had to look at the way that we handle all information – from data held on our IT system to job files kept in filing cabinets. This has touched all areas of the business.”
The TALL Group comprises Checkprint Ltd in Hinckley, Leicestershire and TALL Security Print Ltd in Runcorn, Cheshire.
The leading printer of special cheques and credits, the TALL Group also specialises in electronic document distribution and secure print software solutions working for many of the UK’s leading banks, building societies and financial institutions.
“Clearly, it was vital that we achieve BS7799 (ISO27001),” said group managing director Martin Ruda, “We are delighted that the auditors who assessed the business recognised that we have stringent security procedures in place.
“As a growing and innovative company, we have always prided ourselves on our excellent customer service and our robust security processes are all part of our commitment to our customers.”
TALL was supported in achieving the accreditation by Gordon Davison from Solutions for Quality Ltd following referral by the Independent Print Industries’ Association (IPIA). |

| NIGERIA BANKS ON THE TALL GROUP |
| |
THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has accredited TALL Security Print as one of the first suppliers eligible to produce cheques for the Nigerian banking sector.
The accreditation builds on the company’s growing export business and is seen as a key element in its plans to develop overseas trade.
“This accreditation comes as the Nigerian government overhauls its whole banking system in a bid to eliminate fraud,” explained Martin Ruda, managing director of the TALL Group which includes TALL Security Print and Checkprint Ltd.
“A delegation from the CBN visited our premises before Christmas to meet staff, find out more about our range of services and above all check the quality of our systems and our work.
“They were impressed by our commitment to excellent customer service and were clearly satisfied that we could meet the new Nigerian cheque standards. We are a growing, innovative company and this is another area for business development.”
The Nigerian government and the CBN committed to overhaul the national banking system in a bid to strengthen the sector.
The country had around 90 different banks with varying regulations and this has now been reduced to around 25 stronger institutions.
The CBN has also introduced an APACS style cheque specification and cheque printers’ accreditation scheme. This standardises the layout of Nigerian cheques and ensures that they are image compliant. The move will also weed out printers who are unable to meet the CBN’s stringent requirements.
Already established as a leading printer of special cheques and credits, the TALL Group has developed innovative electronic document distribution systems and secure print solutions as its UK customers make the move from paper to electronic payment systems.
It hopes, however, that its export activity will enable it to take advantage of banking developments overseas.
It appointed Cas Amato as its export sales manager last year and he is currently visiting various countries to build on existing contacts.
Late last year he was instrumental in helping TALL’s Runcorn operation land an export award from the Halton Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise. |

| TALL ORDERS BOTH HOME AND AWAY |
| |
THE TALL Group has added another award to its collection – this time for its developing export business.
The group’s Runcorn division – TALL Security Print Ltd – has been presented with an International Discovery Award by the Halton Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise which represents businesses in Runcorn and neighbouring Widnes.
The award aims to honour a company that has shown initiative in building up export trade and to encourage other businesses to develop overseas markets.
TALL, which is a security printing and solutions specialist, already works for the UK’s leading banks, building societies and financial institutions, but has now branched out overseas supplying special cheques to various countries including Kenya, Kuwait, Tanzania and Uganda.
“The company has been investigating the export market and activity has steadily built up during the course of the year,” explained Bill Lamb, group financial director at TALL.
“We are delighted that this side of the business is developing so successfully and, of course, it is always pleasing to have your achievements recognised by an outside body.”
As part of its commitment to developing overseas trade, the TALL Group has appointed Cas Amato as its export sales manager.
TALL was among a number of companies honoured at the Halton Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise annual gala dinner and business and training awards which were held at The Heath Business & Technical Park on Friday evening.
The International Discovery Award was presented to Bill Lamb by Phillip Envoy, director of marketing for UK Trade and Investment, the Government’s international trade arm which sponsors the Passport to Export scheme.
TALL Security has signed up to the scheme enabling it to access funding and training to support its export trade business.
Open solely to SMEs building overseas markets, the scheme provides a package of export help tailored to individual companies’ needs.
“This initiative will help us to further develop and implement our export plans,” said Bill Lamb, “We are an expanding company and now we are going a step further – literally.”
Earlier this year TALL Security made it through to the finals of the medium business category in the Cheshire Business Awards.
It has Investor in People status, having first gained the accreditation in 2000 and also holds ISO9001:2000.
This is the second award received by the TALL Group this year with its Hinckley division, Checkprint Ltd winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in April 2005. |

| ENTERPRISING STUDENT |
| |
SECURITY printing and solutions specialist Checkprint Ltd has given a student a flying start with his business management and enterprise degree course – confirming its commitment to encourage young people to consider the opportunities in the printing industry.
Checkprint Ltd has awarded a scholarship to Thomas Moore (22) who has just started his BA (Hons) Business Management and Enterprise course at Leicester Business School, De Montfort University (DMU).
The company is a member of the TALL Group of Companies which provides modern printing apprenticeships at its Runcorn division, TALL Security Print Ltd.
“This is the second year we have offered this scholarship which aims to support young, talented entrepreneurs,” explained Martin Ruda, managing director of the TALL Group.
“Our company is the leading provider of special cheques and credits in the country and we have developed award-winning printing solutions through innovative software and hardware packages.
“This scholarship reflects our commitment to working in partnership with other organisations and individuals to put something back into the community.”
Checkprint has presented Thomas with a cheque for £250 as part of the scholarship and has also awarded a £50 book token to runner-up Karl Bassett (19) from Birmingham, who is in the first year of his BA (Hons) Business Enterprise course at DMU.
Thomas, who comes from Coalville in Leicestershire, is pleased to have earned Checkprint’s backing and is looking forward to carrying out work experience projects at the company’s premises in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
“I was surprised when I discovered I had won the scholarship. It was great that the judges liked my ideas,” said Thomas.
“Obviously the extra money will help while I am studying but I am really looking forward to spending time at Checkprint and learning about the business.”
To qualify for the scholarship, students were asked to submit a 500-word essay entitled “Why is entrepreneurship so important in today’s society?”
Judges looked for an appreciation of entrepreneurship and an enthusiasm for enterprise, an awareness of current business affairs as well as motivation, commitment, ambition and excellent writing skills.
The judging panel, which included representatives of the Leicester Business School and Checkprint, interviewed shortlisted candidates before naming the winner.
“It is so important, in today’s market, that links between academia and industry are encouraged; this scholarship is an excellent example of how universities and business can join forces to the greater benefit of students and local industry.” said Dr Robert Webber, Senior Lecturer in enterprise and entrepreneurship at DMU’s Leicester Business School. |

| INNOVATIVE FIRM’S ROYAL ACCOLADE |
| |
CHECKPRINT has been presented with the ultimate business accolade – the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
The security print and software solutions specialist was told it had won the award on the Queen’s birthday in April and this month hosted a special celebratory reception for staff, suppliers and local dignatories at its premises in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
During the reception, the Queen’s representative, Lady Gretton, the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, presented Checkprint’s managing director Martin Ruda with a crystal rosebowl to commemorate the company’s success in the innovation category of the awards.
“This award is a tremendous achievement,” explained Lady Gretton, who recognised the decline in demand for cheque printing and pointed out that the company had pioneered a range of software solutions which combined with exceptional customer service had enabled it to thrive.
She also highlighted the way in which management and employees worked together as a team.
“Many, many congratulations to everyone in the company,” said Lady Gretton as she presented the rosebowl to Mr Ruda.
The managing director responded by saying that Checkprint, which is a member of the TALL Group of companies, was delighted to receive the prestigious award and praised ‘all Checkprint’s people’.
He explained that all employees rose to the challenge of meeting customers’ needs and adopted a stance of always finding a way to get something done.
Other guests at the reception included the mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, Councillor John Bown, and the chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Councillor David Bill, and their respective wives.
The award recognises innovative products provided by Checkprint including secure digital print-on-demand software, a unique stock management/replenishment programme, image and codeline capturing software, and an e-remittance advice module that confirms successful BACS transmission and distributes an advice note by email, fax or print.
“We have pro-actively adapted our range of products and services to suit the increasing need for banks, building societies and other businesses to develop their own secure printing capabilities,” said Mr Ruda.
“As they move from paper to electronic payment methods we have been able to move with them rather than lose their business. By being innovative we have not just survived in this business but have also been incredibly successful.”
Scores of businesses are considered for the Queen’s Award each year. The awards are split into three categories – outstanding achievement in international trade, innovation and sustainable development.
Three separate panels of judges complete a thorough assessment procedure with short-listed companies being then forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Advisory Committee for further scrutiny.
Checkprint was shortlisted in the innovation category of this year’s Leicestershire Business Awards. |

CHECKPRINT has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the ultimate business accolade, after developing an innovative range of software solutions for cheque handling.
The secure print specialist has been honoured for outstanding achievement in innovation – one of the three categories in the annual Queen’s Awards for Enterprise.
Winning the award gives Checkprint, which is part of the TALL Group of Companies, the status of ‘enterprise champion’.
“We are thrilled to have won this prestigious award,” said Martin Ruda, managing director at Checkprint, “It recognises companies that have demonstrated significant commercial success through innovative products or services.
“Our business is built on printing special cheques and credits but while the use of the cheque is declining we have thrived due to our ability to position ourselves in the technology market with our range of software solutions.
“We have pro-actively adapted our range of products and services to suit the increasing need for banks, building societies and other businesses, to develop their own secure printing capabilities.
“As they move from paper to electronic payment methods we have moved with them rather than lose their business. By being innovative we have not just survived in this business but have also been incredibly successful.”
Checkprint has steadily developed products over the past five years, with one of its innovative systems helping customers reduce administrative costs by virtually eliminating the manual handling and storage of cheques.
The company offers a one-stop shop for their combined secure print and electronic document distribution needs.
Its range includes secure digital print-on-demand software, a unique stock management/replenishment programme, image and codeline capturing software, and an e-remittance advice module that confirms successful BACS transmission and distributes an advice note by email, fax or print.

| INNOVATIVE FIRM MAKES BUSINESS AWARDS FINALS |
| |
INNOVATIVE security print specialist Checkprint is hoping to add to its array of awards after making it through to the finals of the Leicestershire Business Awards 2005.
Checkprint, which is part of the TALL Group of Companies, has been shortlisted in the ‘Enterprise Through Innovation’ category of this year’s awards after developing a range of ‘Checkprint Software Solutions’ that comprise various secure print and electronic document distribution systems.
In 2002 the company won the ‘Success Through People’ category of the prestigious awards and it was also a finalist the year after in the ‘Contribution To Community’ category. “We are delighted to have made it to the finals for the 4th time in 5 years ,” said Martin Ruda, managing director of the TALL Group, “We are a successful, growing company and have thrived because of our ability to be innovative.
“We built this business by printing special cheques and credits but as the usage of cheques has declined we have taken pro-active steps to understand our customers’ needs so that as they move from paper to electronic payment methods we can migrate with them rather than lose them.”
From 1993 to 2003, there has been a 45 per cent decline in the use of cheques and industry specialists predict that there will be a further six per cent drop in cheque usage annually.
Checkprint, which is based in Hinckley, Leicestershire, has adopted an ‘innovate or die’ stance, reinventing itself with a proactive approach. It has developed a range of software solution products, designed to offer businesses a one-stop shop for their secure print and electronic document distribution needs. This includes digital print-on-demand software, a stock management/replenishment programme, image and codeline capturing software, and an e-remittance advice module that confirms successful BACS transmission and distributes an advice note by email, fax or print.
Judges will now visit all finalists before choosing a winner in all seven categories of the awards. The winners will be announced at De Montfort Hall on May 20.“We are looking forward to the judges’ visit and the awards night,” said Mr Ruda, “We believe we can demonstrate how our innovation has enabled us to adapt to the changes in our industry and thrive. “We blend our knowledge of technology, our experience in the market and our flexible and adaptable organisation, in order to out perform competitors.” |

| CHECKPRINT JOINS COUNTRY’S LEADING BUSINESSES AT AWARDS NIGHT |
| |
SPECIALIST printer Checkprint Ltd joined the country’s leading businesses at the finals of the prestigious National Business Awards at London’s Grosvenor Hotel earlier this week.
And, while the company – which is part of the TALL Group - did not pick up the winner’s trophy, its managing director Martin Ruda said being one of five finalists in the Small to Medium Sized Business of the Year category was a major success in itself.
“We were delighted to make it to the finals in these awards so while we are disappointed not to have won we feel that even coming this far was a great achievement,” said Mr Ruda.
“All five companies in the final were identified as the best examples of small and medium-sized enterprises that were innovative, fast growing and exceptionally well managed.
“We feel our success is due to the efforts of the whole team at Checkprint and that having reached the finals the judges recognised our commitment to innovative products and outstanding customer service.
“Our success in the National Business Awards consolidates our position as the country’s leading provider of secure print solutions.”
The awards ceremony was attended by leading business figures and was hosted by Michael Wilson, business editor of Sky News which filmed the event.
Acknowledged by The Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown as the “business oscars”, the National Business Awards are designed to recognise and reward business excellence, innovation and best practice throughout the UK.
Checkprint, which is based in Hinckley, Leicestershire, won the Midlands and East of England region finals to earn its place in the final, having been the only winner in two categories in the regional awards.
The Small to Medium Sized Business of the Year Award was open to organisations with less than £10 million turnover best demonstrating significant growth and innovation in their market sector, underpinned by strong financial performance.
Checkprint has achieved outstanding financial results over the last 18 months. It has also produced two innovative software products which led to major contracts with a number of financial institutions including Churchill Insurance and Nationwide Building Society.
This latest success caps an award-winning year for Checkprint which also reached the finals of the Leicestershire Business Awards in the spring.
Checkprint is part of the TALL Group of Companies which also includes Runcorn based TALL Security Print Ltd. |
